Come to The New Farm SFPL event this Saturday- Calixto and I will be doing a screen printing workshop

SFPL BARN Day

The New Farm will be jumping with live music, dancers, new book giveaways, art and crafts, and of course, goats and chickens, plus the Bookmobile will be there.

“It’s a farm. It’s a chicken grazing field. It’s an environmental education center. And it might just be the coolest new music venue in all of San Francisco.” --SF Gate on The New Farm

Music:

Asheba: Caribbean music with a musical storyteller who specializes in calypso, the musical and folkloric oral tradition of his homeland, Trinidad.

Sampaguita: A not to miss set with the rocking Sampaguita Filipina/x/o Girls Rock Camp.

Dance:

The Strutters: Experience Boogaloo, Robotting and Strutting, dance styles that came out of Oakland, Richmond and San Francisco.

Art and Craft:

Calixto Robles and Ali Blum: People of all ages will create mixed media screen print art. You will print on paper and/or cloth patches, create prints of animals and food found on farms including cows, chickens, sheep, cats, vegetables and fruit.

Crochet Jam: hosted by sculptor Ramekon O'Arwisters, uses the folk-art tradition of crocheting strips of fabric into free-form and organic soft sculptures to foster social interaction, creativity and liberation. Crochet Jam is an opportunity for play, experimentation, and for allowing the material to transform naturally without any expectations nor any attempt to control the outcome. Participants become a conduit for the transformation of the material without any resistance, whether they like what they see or not.

Walking Tours: Heron's Head Park Walking Field Trip. On this stroller-friendly trail you will get to view and identify birds and other city wildlife.

Times: 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

The New Farm is an ecology center, creative space and community gathering place.

Andrew Pollack, founder of The New Farm, is the president of the Green City Project, an environmental education nonprofit.

"48 PILLARS" Bay Area Exhibition 2023
OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, February 25th 7-9PM

48 Pillars was inspired by a chance encounter at Flax with a close-out sale of deep vertical panels, 48” x 12” x 1 5/8”. Twenty-four local Bay Area artists each produce two companion pieces or diptychs on these identically sized panels. The panels exactly ring the gallery - 48 works total. It is essentially a “structural constraint” show. The artists are unconstrained in subject matter, except to the extent that works need to be a series, but they are constrained in format.

curated by Arc partner, Michael Yochum

EXHIBITION: February 25 – April 8, 2023

Featured artists: Carlo Abruzzese, Afatasi The Artist, Ali Blum, Richard Bolingbroke, Jessica Dunne, Annie Galvin, Daniel Galvez, Jordan Herren, Soad Kader, Hope Kroll, Jeff Long, Bao-Khang Luu, Stephen Namara, Linda Raynsford, Fernando Reyes, Wendy Robushi. Dialogue: Artist Talk with Alexandra Blum

Alexandra Blum, San Francisco artist and educator leads us on a virtual artist studio tour and discussion of her work during the time of COVID-19.

Artist Statement: I have always loved the versatility of printmaking and work mostly in mixed media including monoprinting, screen printing, transfers, drawings and gouache. Folktales and myths have also been integral to my understanding of the world. Over time, hybrid creatures and genetic engineering have blended with mythological images of my childhood and I find myself drawing connections-- the web of life to environment, politics, climate change, fires, food production, COVID19 and our planet.

Since sheltering in place my work has been exclusively about COVID and documenting my experience. I have returned to old images and working back into them as well as creating new work. This outpouring of emotions and energy has resulted in a new and ongoing body of work.

Alexandra Blum received her BFA from Cornell University in Painting and her MFA in Printmaking from Washington University in St Louis. She has had residencies at Curtiduria Print shop in Oaxaca, Mexico, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Ali actively exhibits group and solo shows include De Young Museum, Cornell University Hartell Gallery, San Francisco Public Library, Museo de la Filatelia de Oaxaca, Ligne Roset, Front Gallery, Somarts, Paxton Gate Curiosities for Kids, The Mission Cultural Center and The San Francisco Jewish Library.

Ali teaches at Drew School and the students serve as a constant source of energy and inspiration. She has conducted workshops and live art demonstrations at the SFMOMA, De Young Friday Night Events, The Academy of Sciences, Asian Art Museum intern program and The Jewish Museum. She is a member of the California Printmaking Society.
